The General Consul of France Visited Beit Sahour

The general consul of France in Jerusalem Mr. Alain Remy has visited Beit Sahour Municipality along with Ms. Jacqueline Coulon- Lascaux – Attachee de Cooperation sociale et humanitaire, the two guests were warmly received by the Mayor Mr. Hani Al- Hayek and the council members. The mayor introduced the council members pointing out that this council which consists of thirteen members in total including four women was democratically elected by the citizens in the year 2005.

The Mayor gave a brief about the situation and difficulties that are facing the Palestinians in general and the Municipalities in particular due to the continued siege. The mayor then talked about the solid and good relations that connects Beit Sahour Municipality with other French Municipalities and stressed out the fact that such connections are very important for the work of the municipality.

The delegation then took a tour in the city of Beit Sahour where they visited the Bypass road where they saw with their own eyes the land that belonged to the Palestinians and were confiscated by the Israelis. Later they visited the evacuated camp site were the municipality is planning to establish a public park and finally they visited the Industrial Zone.

Eng. Hanan Manoly from the Municipality of Beit Sahour presented a presentation about Beit Sahour, its historical importance and then she displayed the municipality’s planned future projects. The projects are the industrial zone, Al Mismaka project, improving the lighting system and installing new sewage and water lines in Beit Sahour.

At the end of the visit, a group of young musicians from the Edward Saed Conservatory of Music played two pieces of Arabic music; their performance was very much liked by the audience. As part of the working program for the year 2007 between the Municipality of Grenoble – France and the Municipality of Beit Sahour- Palestine, this group was invited by the city of Grenoble - France to participate in a Youth Musicians Camp along with other young musicians from nine different cities in the world.

Finally, the French consul Mr. Remy thanked the Mayor and council members for the friendly welcome and assured that the French people will always support the Palestinians and their cause.
