A delegation from the city of Xanten, Germany made its first visit to Beit Sahour and attended the Great Joy Celebration of 2009. The delegation-comprised of the Mayor of Xanten, Mr. Christian Strunk, city council members, political party leaders and others-was accompanied by Mrs. Ibtisam Khoury, a former Beit Sahour native who resides in Xanten with her husband and family.

The delegation was met and hosted by the Beit Sahour Municipality and the Beit Sahour-Xanten Partnership Committee. The committee was formed in order to facilitate communication and cooperation with the respective Xanten committee.

Mayor Hani al-Hayek has made a few previous visits to Xanten and hopes the next visit will result in a Friendship/Partnership Agreement between the two cities.

The delegation enjoyed the Great Joy festivities which include the Peace Procession and the lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the municipality building.

This year the Great Joy Celebration drew over 8000 participants including H.E. Dr. Salam Fayyad, Mr. Howard Sumka, Mission Director of USAID/WBG, and Mr. Christian Berger, Director of ECTAO.

The Xanten delegation and Mayor Strunk, expressed their hopes for future cooperation between the municipalities and respective community-based organizations. The collaboration will be kicked-off by two full scholarships for 10th graders from Beit Sahour schools to attend an international school in Xanten.
