A letter from Mayor Hani Al-Hayek regarding the recent developments
in Ush Ghurab Peace Park

March 19, 2010

Dear Friends of Peace and Justice,

First of all I would like to thank you for your commitment to the Palestinian people and to the community of Beit Sahour. We recognize that without the support and commitment of our partners, allies, friends and donors, Beit Sahour would not be the city of hope and progress as it is today.

Therefore, it saddens me to contact you today with some terrible news. A few days ago the Israeli Military Forces constructed a watch tower adjacent to-literally across the street from Ush Ghurab Peace Park. Attached you will find the photos.

The consequences of this action are hitherto unknown since this development is quite new. Of course, we were informed officially that this would happen. However, knowing does not take away the devastation we felt in our hearts upon seeing this monstrosity of injustice and symbol of apartheid in the midst of our beloved and treasured peace park.

Beit Sahour and its citizens, just as all the Palestinian cities and people, have thus far survived the longest and most inhuman occupation in the history of the world. Our main strength lies in our perseverance. I am here to tell you that we will continue to persevere. The park will remain open and continue to provide much needed services to the community. We will not abandon the park and we hope that you do not abandon it either.

Thank you once again for your support and commitment.

Best regards,
Hani Al-Hayek
