Special Lunch to Honor the Palestinian Ambassador to Chile,
Dr. Mai Al-Khaila at Ush Ghurab Peace Park

Mayor Hani Al-Hayek, in conjunction with the Municipal Council, hosts a lunch at Ush Ghurab Peace Park for the Palestinian Ambassador to Chile, Dr. Mai Al-Kaila on Thursday, April 8, 2010.

Dr. Mai Al-Kaila has been the Palestinian Ambassador to Chile for the past four years. Born in Jerusalem, she studied medicine at Birzeit University and completed her studies in Spain and the United States. For 17 years, Ms. Al-Kaila worked with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) - the UN agency responsible for providing services to Palestinian refuges in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West bank and the Gaza Strip - in the women and child health program in the West Bank.

In October and November of 2009, the Ambassador warmly received the Beit Sahour delegation, lead by Mayor Hani Al-Hayek during a visit to Chile. Approximately 350,000 people of Palestinian descent inhabit Chile, making it the largest non-native community in that country.

Dr. Al-Kaila is in Palestine on a personal visit but came to lunch at Ush Ghurab for a special reason. Having heard about the return of the Israeli Military to the area, she planted olive trees in Ush Ghurab as a sign of support to the Beit Sahour community.
